Family Fun in Curaçao: Our Colorful Caribbean Getaway

Must-See Spots in Curacao for an Unforgettable Island Adventure

We just returned from the most magical family vacation in Curaçao, and I couldn’t wait to share all the highlights with you! From vibrant streets to crystal-clear turquoise water and a whole lot of island charm, Curaçao quickly climbed to the top of our “places we’d go back to in a heartbeat” list.

Whether you’re planning your first visit or just daydreaming of turquoise water and colourful buildings, here’s everything we loved, and what you have to see to make your trip smooth and sunny.

Why We Chose Curaçao

Curaçao is part of the Dutch Caribbean and sits just outside the hurricane belt (big bonus if you’re traveling in summer or fall). It’s bursting with culture, history, and the kind of natural beauty that makes every photo look like a postcard. And—parents, listen up—it’s family-friendly without being overly touristy.

Must-See Places in Curaçao (Kid-Approved!)

1. Willemstad

This colorful capital city feels like a European town dropped into the tropics. We walked across the floating Queen Emma Bridge, strolled through Punda and Otrobanda to enjoy the street art, and snapped endless photos of the rainbow-colored buildings lining the waterfront.

Family Tip: enjoy a meal at one of the restaurants along the water with a view of the Queen Emma bridge. The kids will love watching the floating bridge move for incoming boats. We loved The Iguana Cafe. Great food and great view of the Queen Emma Bridge.

Every Thursday Willemstad has Punda Vibes where you will enjoy lots of live music and fireworks. I would recommend planning a day trip to Willemstad to check out the floating market and the gorgeous street art as well as a Thursday evening visit for Punda vibes.

2. Playa Kenepa Grandi (Grote Knip)

Hands-down one of the most stunning beaches we’ve ever visited. White sand, turquoise water, and perfect snorkeling for beginners—our kids were obsessed with spotting little fish right at the shoreline. There is also a spot to cliff jump which was a huge highlight for my kids.

3. Shete Boka National Park

For a break from beach lounging, explore Curaçao’s rugged coastline. This park is home to dramatic blowholes, caves, and waves that crash with serious force.

Family Tip: Wear sneakers—this is more of a rocky walk than a flip-flop stroll.

4. Play Porto Marie

Beautiful white sand beach with great snorkelling and it’s home to pigs! That’s right, this beach has a family of pigs that roam around. We saw one grab a snorkel and run down the beach!

5. Daibooi Beach

This beach is beautiful and it features amazing snorkeling. We lucked out and discovered a family of sea turtles while snorkeling! This was a highlight of the trip for us! Swimming with turtles was high up on our bucket list. The turtles tend to hang out on the right side of the beach by the boat launch area where they launch the jet skis. Snorkeling along the rocks around there you will likely spot a turtle.

6. Tugboat Beach

Tugboat Beach is a snorkeler’s paradise and one of Curaçao’s most unique coastal spots, famous for the small sunken tugboat resting just a few meters from shore. Over the years, the wreck has transformed into a vibrant underwater reef, teeming with colorful fish, corals, and marine life—making it a dream for both beginner and experienced snorkelers.

7. Fort Beekenburg

Fort Beekenburg is an 18th-century fort with sweeping views of turquoise Caribbean waters. Built in 1703 to protect the island from pirates and invading ships, it’s a rare chance to step right into history. You can explore the thick stone walls and ancient cannons while imagining life in the Dutch colonial era. Unlike some historic sites, Fort Beekenburg feels refreshingly untouched—you can climb its narrow stairs, wander its ramparts, and take in panoramic vistas without the crowds.

Where We Stayed

We opted for a family-friendly Airbnb near Jan Thiel Beach, with a private pool. It gave us the perfect mix of home comforts and tropical vibes. There are many homes available for rent on Airbnb and VRBO.

Ultimate Packing List for a Trip to Curaçao

Everything you need to enjoy a fun, stress-free island getaway in the Dutch Caribbean.

⸻

We just got back from an amazing family vacation in Curaçao. The beaches, stunning turquoise water and vibrant culture made it our favourite family destination to date! I thought I would share what we packed and used on our trip. I did a lot of research before we left, and was glad to have brought along what we did.

Here’s what my family brought to Curaçao. Most of these are items that we probably could have found in Curaçao, but brought from home. Buying these at home saved us lots of money and time!

Snorkel Gear

We packed along snorkel gear for our family of five. We dedicated one checked bag to beach stuff and packed our snorkels and fins in that. You can rent snorkel gear at almost all of the beaches in Curaçao. However it was much more affordable for us to buy them at home. Plus it saved us from having to do that at every beach. We kept our snorkel gear in the trunk where it was ready when we hit the beach!

We ended up buying three these full sets with fins from Amazon. And then bringing along 2 snorkel sets we already owned. This Amazon set worked great.

Reef Safe Sunscreen

Sunscreen is readily available at all grocery stores in Curaçao, but very expensive. Make sure you are choosing Reef safe sunscreen to protect the coral! We brought lots of reef safe mineral sunscreen with us.

Water Shoes

The beaches in Curaçao can be rocky or full of coral, so water shoes are a must! I bought these affordable ones on Amazon for the whole family.

Dry Bag

These water proof Fanny packs worked great! They kept out keys, cash, credit cards, and phones dry while we swam and snorkelled. Curaçao is very safe. However there is still petty theft. If we were all in the water at the same time we would wear these in the water. They were comfortable to wear and kept everything dry!

Beach Towels

Beach hopping in Curaçao is a must! Our AirBnb provided beach towels so I didn’t pack our Turkish towels. I really regret this, because the towels provided by the Airbnb were were heavy and took forever to dry. I wish we had brought our Turkish towels; they are light, roll up small and dry quickly!

Floatie

These water hammock floats are perfect for travel! Easy to pack and perfect for the pool and ocean. We enjoyed floating in the pool at our Airbnb and they were great for snorkeling as well.

Waterproof Camera

We bought this action camera on Amazon for our trip. It comes with a lot of accessories, including a waterproof case. We got some amazing snorkeling videos with this camera! We bought a floating handle attachment for it as well. My boys wanted to take videos cliff jumping into the ocean. Very happy with this purchase. We captured some great memories in the water!

Waterproof Phone Case

We brought a couple of inexpensive waterproof phone cases as well. My boys used these while snorkeling and got some great photos. The quality of the photos and videos through the case were not as good as with the action camera. However, it was still great to capture on your phone in the water.
