Soft Elastic ear loops for your homemade fabric Mask

Soft diy mask earloops from headband

If you would have told me a year ago that I would be sewing a stack of cloth masks for my family, I would have thought you were crazy! But here we are. I am finding there is a shortage of elastic now that everyone is making masks, so I had to get creative when making mine.

I bought some stretchy headbands and cut them up into strips to make my ear loops. They work great and are so soft on the ears!

I was able to get four pairs of ear loops from each headband. However, that would vary depending on the stretch of the headband fabric.

I used Made Every Day’s Fabric Face Mask free pattern to make my masks. The only change I made was to do ears loops instead of the around the head ties.

I hope you try this is you are having trouble finding elastic to make masks or if you just want to try something that is softer on the ears! What is your favourite fabric mask pattern? I am going to try the 3D fitted mask style next.

Custom Camper Cutting Board – Easy DIY for Camper

We are cleaning our trailer and packing it up for our first camping trip of the season. I recently bought a wood burner and wanted to make a cutting board for the camper. These little bamboo cutting boards from the Dollar Tree are the perfect size for camping. I also picked up a bamboo spatula to customize for the camper.

For the cutting board, I used my HAPPY CAMPER cut file. I printed off the png clipart file and used graphite paper to transfer the design onto the cutting board. For the spatula I just sketched the roasting marshmallows with pencil and then traced over with the wood burner.

Use Graphite paper to transfer your design onto your cutting board and utensils

I am new to wood burning but have had fun playing with it. I bought this basic Walnut Hollow wood burner from Michaels. It comes with a few different tips.

The basic wood burner I used

I can’t wait to try it out while we are camping this weekend! These would make great gifts for your friends and family.

Do you have a wood burner? What are your favourite projects to use it for?

Easy DIY Dog Collar

When we got our little Lucy I wasn’t that impressed with the selection of dog collars in the pet store. I decided to try making a collar but found it hard to source the hardware without buying big quantities of them in bulk. When browsing in the Dollar Tree I saw their dog collars and thought I would try using their hardware to make my own collar.

Supplies needed: Dog collar, seam ripper, ribbon

This time I used a mint satin ribbon. The first collar I made her was with a velvet ribbon. The velvet one is probably my favourite that I’ve made. I am on the hunt for wider velvet ribbon so I can make a new one.

Remember to take photos of the collar before your take it apart so you will know how to put it back together!!

First you need to use a seam ripper to take out the seams of your collar. There are 2 areas sewn on the collar.

Once you have done that, remove the buckles and D ring. Next cut a piece of ribbon the same length as the collar.

Place the ribbon on top of the collar and sew along each side to secure it.

You will now put it back together and sew to secure everything in place. That’s it, you’re done! Now go try it on your pup!

Just want to mention that Lucy’s sweet dog tag was ordered from the Etsy Shop Field Trip. I love it so much! We have had it for almost three years now and it is still in perfect shape.

I decided to add her name with some heat transfer vinyl. Don’t throw away those vinyl scraps from other projects!

This is such an easy and inexpensive project. I love that I can change up her collar for holidays or just when they get dirty without having to spend a lot every time!

Macrame Air Conditioner Cover

We have an old air conditioner in our sun room that works great but isn’t very pretty to look at. I made this macrame cover for it. It hides the a/c unit and matches the boho style of the room.

Before – The Old ugly air conditioner in full view.

First I built a simple box that slides over the air conditioner. I then stapled a piece of cotton rope to the top of the cover and made a macrame screen with square knots. I couldn’t find any macrame cord locally so I used cotton clothesline I found at the hardware store.

Macrame Screen covers the ugly air conditioner

I am so happy with the way it turned out! It was such an easy project. Love how it covers up the air conditioner while still allowing the air to circulate.

Handmade Cloth Doll – free face cut file

I may have all boys, but I have few little nieces who I get to sew all things girly for! For my niece’s 2nd birthday I decided to make her a handmade doll. I had so much fun making her! This is where my fabric hoarding comes in handy – I always have an abundance of little bits of fabric I can’t bear to part with.

I used Amie Scott’s Free Ragdoll Pattern for the body of the doll.

I am terrible at hand embroidery so I decided to use heat transfer vinyl for the doll’s face. I made a cut file for the eyelashes and mouth. Free download available below! I ironed the vinyl on the face before sewing the doll together.

The eyelashes measured about 2.5 inches across and the mouth about 0.75 inches wide.

Such a fun sewing project to experminet with texture and fabric. Go make one for all the little girls you know! If you make one please tag me on instagram @handmadejoydesigns #handmadejoyblog. I would love to see what you created!

DIY Baby Footprint Ornaments – Made with Cricut

These baby footprint ornaments are my new favourite ornaments on our tree! I am going to show you how easy these were to make with my Cricut.

First step is to scan your footprints. (I had a good cry while looking through the baby books….how do they grow up so fast!) I then uploaded the image into Cricut Design Space. I selected simple image and removed the white space so only the footprint remained.

Save your image as a cut file and insert onto the canvas. I added each child’s name to the ornament as well. Cut out your vinyl and apply to your ornament!

A quick, easy keepsake ornament for your tree! Now go dig out those baby books, there is still time before Christmas to whip up these ornaments.

Mini Plant Stand Tutorial

I picked up some plants for the boys’ teachers and wanted to make mini plant stands for them. I’m so happy with how they turned out! I put together a little tutorial for you below if you’d like to make one too.

You will Need:

1 – 1/2 inch wood dowel

4 – 1/2 inch copper plumbing fittings

4 – 1/2 inch copper plumbing caps

Wood glue

1/4 inch wooden dowel pins

*I made these for a 5 inch plant pot. Remember to measure your pot and adjust accordingly. *

First you will need to cut your dowel.

8 – 4 inch pieces

1 – 5.5 inch piece

2 – 2.5 inch pieces

Next drill a hole through the center of the 5.5 inch dowel piece and glue the dowel pin in place. Drill holes in one end of each of the 2.5 inch dowel pieces. Put some wood glue into each drilled hole and insert dowel pin. Allow glue to dry completely.

Now you will assemble the legs of your plant stand. Insert 4 inch dowel pieces into top and bottom of the copper plumbing fittings and put copper caps on bottom of the legs.

Once your glue has completely dried you can assemble the plant stand. I just love how the wood and copper look together! I stained one stand and left the other unstained – I couldn’t decide which I liked better.

If you make one tag me on Instagram @handmadejoydesigns and use #handmadejoyblog I would love to see your mini plant stands!

Do your kids hand out just cards or do you usually give candy along with your cards? My youngest is in preschool and I find that they don’t always give candy, but a small toy/sticker/pencil with their cards. For my older boys in elementary they like to give candy along with their cards.
