Family Read Aloud Favorites – 4 books your kids will love!

If there’s one thing I’ve learned as a mom, it’s this: the right read-aloud can magically slow the day down. The dishes can wait, the laundry can live unfolded for one more night, and suddenly everyone is piled onto the couch/bed listening to a story together. Here are 4 of our Family Read Aloud Favorites.

Family Read Aloud Favorites

Read-aloud time has become one of our favorite family rhythms—especially with books that spark imagination, laughter, and really good conversations. These are the books we come back to again and again, and the ones my kids still talk about long after the final chapter.

If you’re building a family read aloud list, these four books are absolute gems. My criteria for favorite family read alouds are books that keep them engaged and make them laugh.

Pippi Longstocking by Astrid Lindgren

Pippi Longstocking book for family read aloud

Pippi Longstocking was one of my favourites to read as a child. My boys were laughing through this whole book. They thought Pippi was hilarious!

Pippi Longstocking is pure joy in book form. She’s strong enough to lift a horse, brave enough to live alone, and confident enough to do things her way—pink braids and all.

As a read-aloud, this book is a hit because:

  • The chapters are short and perfect for busy evenings
  • Kids love Pippi’s wild antics
  • Parents love the subtle message of independence and kindness

Mr. Popper’s Penguins by Richard & Florence Atwater

Mr. Popper’s Penguins is another book I remember from my childhood. It is very different from the Jim Carey movie. My boys loved this book and my youngest especially as he has always been fascinated with penguins.

If you’ve never read this one aloud, you’re in for a treat. Mr. Popper’s Penguins is delightfully absurd in the best possible way. One penguin turns into many, and suddenly a quiet house is filled with flippers, fish, and frozen floors.

Why it works so well as a family read-aloud:

  • The humor lands for kids and adults
  • It encourages big imaginations and silly “what if” questions
  • It’s perfect for elementary-aged listeners

Frindle by Andrew Clements

Family Read Aloud Favorite

Frindle was new to me and I fell in love with it. It had my boys laughing and coming up with their own new words. Definitely a must read!

This book is amazing for:

  • Introducing themes like creativity, rules, and standing up for yourself
  • Sparking conversations about language and ideas
  • Older kids who love clever stories

Every time we read Frindle, it leads to thoughtful questions and debates—and I love watching my kids realize that ideas matter.

The Very, Very Far North by Dan Bar-el

This book is a great read full of humor and whimsy. Set in the snowy north, The Very, Very Far North is made up of interconnected stories about Duane the curious polar bear and the friends he meets on his adventure.

Why it’s a perfect read-aloud:

  • Calm, comforting storytelling
  • Short chapters that work beautifully before bedtime
  • Sweet lessons about friendship, empathy, and problem-solving

Why Read-Aloud Time Matters

It’s easy to think read-alouds are just for little kids—but some of our best family moments have happened with chapter books. Reading aloud:

  • Builds connection
  • Encourages listening and imagination
  • Creates shared memories your kids will carry forever

These books have become part of our family story, and I hope they find a place in your family too.
